The Two Models
| Pay per minute | Flat rate | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Only for minutes used | Fixed price per session or question |
| Common on | Live chat, phone and video platforms | Email readings, private readers, events |
| Best for | Short, focused questions | Long or complex readings |
| Risk | Running over time | Paying for time you don't use |
When Per-Minute Is Cheaper
For a single question, per-minute billing almost always wins — especially with welcome offers. A 10-minute reading at $1/min costs $10; many flat-rate readings start at $25–$40.
When Flat Rate Is Cheaper
For a long, detailed reading — a year-ahead spread or a Celtic Cross with written notes — a flat price can cost less than an hour of live per-minute time, and you won't feel rushed.
Email and Written Readings
Some platforms offer written readings at a fixed price. They're convenient and give you a permanent record, but you can't ask follow-up questions in real time.
How to Decide
Estimate how long you'd need live. Under about 25 minutes, per-minute is usually cheaper; above an hour, compare flat-rate options. The calculator helps with the per-minute side.
Cost Example
| Reading | Per-minute (at $1.50) | Typical flat rate |
|---|---|---|
| One question (10 min) | $15 | $20–$35 |
| Love reading (25 min) | $37.50 | $35–$60 |
| Celtic Cross (40 min) | $60 | $45–$80 |
| Year ahead (60 min) | $90 | $60–$120 |
Hybrid Options
Some readers offer fixed-price written readings delivered later, or packages of minutes at a small discount. Packages only save money if you'll actually use the minutes — unused minutes are wasted money.
What to Ask Before Paying a Flat Fee
- How many cards and questions are included?
- Is it live or delivered later?
- Can I ask a follow-up question?
- What happens if I'm not satisfied?
